Theodore Gericault (1791-1824)
Unlike John Constable, who viewed Nature as the source of health and tranquility, Gericault found it perverse and destructive and it ended up destroying him; he died of a mysterious illness at the early age of 33. Of all the great Romantics he is, perhaps, the most incomplete. However, he did create one masterpiece, The Raft of the Medusa, which reveals him as potentially one of the greatest painters of the 19th Century.
