Inspired by Anton Chekhov's story, this film version vividly captures the boredom, frustration, hysteria and near madness experienced by a man who bets a wealthy friend that he can isolate himself in a single room for five years. In the film version, learning and becoming a better human being initiates the action. In both versions materialist gain is the catalyst - "two million" in the story and a yacht in the film. A study of the differences between the film and the short story will education viewers about both film and literature. An exploration of the film¹s use of color, quick cuts, flash frames and sound will be of interest to those studying film.
